Cardiovascular Benefits of Dark Chocolates

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

There is some great news for all those chocolate lovers out there and that is that dark chocolates are good for you. Well, good for your heart at least! It’s amazing that there are health benefits from chocolate because we all wanted a reason to be able to eat chocolate and not feel guilty! Things like Hershey cherry cordials may be eaten without feeling guilty just don’t eat too many!

There are lots of other dark chocolate selections other than a Hershey’s cherry cordial in case you like other flavors. There are dark chocolate bars that are plain, have nuts, cranberries, and even blueberries. You may even find organic dark chocolates made with a variety of other ingredients including red pepper! That’s certainly one way to spice up your dark chocolate.

When you eat dark chocolate you won’t only be enjoying it but you will also be offering yourself some protection against cardiovascular disease. The reason why there are health benefits from this particular type of chocolate is because of the flavenoids inside. These flavenoids catalyze a reaction in the endothelial cells, cells that line your veins and arteries, to improve function.

The flavenoids, which are basically antioxidants, are also found in a variety of other foods. There are certain fruits, wines, teas, and vegetables that offer up flavenoids that will help you reduce your chances of developing cardiovascular disease. The more flavenoids you eat the lower your chances will be.

In just a short six week study ingesting dark chocolate on a daily basis shows a great increase in endothelial function. This makes researchers believe that if individuals up their intake of flavenoids over a long period of time they will really see amazing benefits in regards to cardiovascular health.

So, if you love chocolate start replacing your milk chocolate with dark chocolate. Not only will you still enjoy the flavor but you will be receiving great benefits that could positively affect your heart health. Remember dark chocolate still has fat and calories so these findings do not give you free reign to eat pounds of chocolate a day. But, the findings so far look positive that dark chocolate may be able to help us in the long run with heart health! Be sure to talk with your doctor before using dark chocolate as a health food so that you can fully understand the implications and what they mean for you.

Elder Care: The Challenge of Caring for Aging Parents

Friday, May 4th, 2007

We are all so accustomed to our parents caring for us that it is so very hard when the roles reverse. We see our parents as young, strong, and invincible. But, as they age we notice how weak they have become and how much they rely on their children to help them now. Life has started changing and no longer do the parents care for the children, but the children are beginning to care for the parents. One of the things that goes along with caring for aging parents is how to handle the mobility problems that ensue when a parent begins using a walker, cane, wheelchair, or is bedridden for months at a time. Fortunately, there are wheelchair lifts, vertical lifts, dumbwaiters, and even residential elevators that assist with these problems and allow individuals to help their parents through the aging process and allow them their mobility even if it is in a different fashion than before.

It might seem difficult to make the decision to purchase a wheelchair lift or even a residential elevator for your aging parents; however these decisions have positive benefits for your parents. For example, if you have a wheelchair lift then your parents can go up and down stairs themselves without additional help. That means you don’t have to be there every single moment to ensure that your parents are ok and that their needs are met. Things like dumbwaiters are also important for aging individuals because food, newspapers, or other items may be placed inside the mini elevator and then it delivers these items to the appointed room.

Dealing with your aging parents is not easy and while it is hard to see your parents grow old and need assistance you don’t have to despair too much because there are so many options available. Your parents can stay mobile through the many devices available and you won’t have to worry about them being stuck in a single room with no way to get around.

Check into the different things that are available and the ones that would be of the most use to your aging parents. You will find that they are affordable enough to purchase and they will make life significantly easier for your parents. So, go ahead and look into vertical lifts, residential elevators, and the like to see if they will help your parents get their mobility back.
