Saturday, June 14th, 2008

As with anything, plastic tanks eventually need to be replaced. You will find that chemical storage tanks as well as other things like well tanks wear out on their own schedule. When a tank begins to show signs of wear, you will know it is time to start shopping for a new one. However, you may have no idea what kind of tank to look for. In this situation, the best thing you can do is hire a professional. You can learn to handle the situation on your own, but it will take a lot of time and is really a lot of effort. If you hire a professional to hire this for you then you will certainly appreciate it and consider it worth the money spent. Unless you have a lot of extra time and money on your hands, it simply makes more sense to hire an expert to help replace old, worn tanks. Go ahead and start calling tank companies and see what they say. This will help you make the right decision when it comes to tanks.

Drink Pure Water for Your Health

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007
Did you know the quality of the water you drink could affect your health? Many people who choose to drink the tap water in their homes will be ingesting things like fluoride, chlorine, and other chemicals that are not necessarily good for your body and that make the water taste quite strange. If you are tired of the way city water tastes then you ought to consider using water filters. You can buy filters that you attach to each faucet or reverse osmosis systems that treat all of the water in the home. It is completely up to you how you handle your water purification and your budget may come into play to some degree. For example, it is quite affordable to buy faucet attachments for a couple of faucets in your home. Especially those you use for drinking water. However, it costs more to buy filters for all your faucets, showers, and water lines. If you choose to go this route it will certainly pay off in the future but it will cost more up front. An easy way to justify the expense is to add up how much money you spend on bottled water over the period of a year. With this number in mind you can shop for reverse osmosis systems and you will find that in time you will actually save money!

Personal Security Devices

Monday, November 5th, 2007
Women need to defend themselves from individuals who might want to cause them harm. As a result all women need their own personal security devices to help them defend predators, thieves, or would be attackers. There are all kinds of personal security devices women may use to protect themselves. Some of those include pepper spray, flashlight stun guns, and stun batons.

Pepper Spray
Pepper spray is an excellent option for women to carry in their purses or even on their key chains. This spray comes in a small aerosol can that when the button is pressed a stream of pepper spray ejects. If aimed at the attacker’s face and eyes it will cause them to stop in pain.

Stun Guns
Stun guns are another personal security device that women should consider carrying with them. A stun gun, such as a small fry stun gun, is a small hand held device that delivers a high voltage shock when it is touched to an individual for approximately three to five seconds. Once shocked the individual will lose control of their muscles, lose their balance, become confused and disoriented, and fall to the ground.

Stun Baton
A stun baton is a long metal baton, similar to a flashlight that has an electric shock head. This baton allows you to keep an attacker at arm’s length and you can shock them without having to be very close to them. This is an excellent way to protect yourself and fend off would be attackers.

These are just some of the security devices available for women. There are other options available as well that will help women protect themselves in a scary situation. Hopefully every women out there carrying a stun gun, stun baton, or pepper spray will never need to use it. But in the case where it becomes necessary it could be a lifesaver. All women should carry some form of self-defense with them at all times, especially if they travel alone at night.

A Brief History of Organ Donation

Friday, August 24th, 2007

We frequently think of organ donation as a relatively new phenomena however organ donation has actually been around for a very long time. The problem with organ and tissue donation was not the ability to transplant the organs and tissues but rather the problems of infection and rejection. In fact, there is historical evidence of a Chinese physician who transplanted the heart of a man who had a strong spirit and weak will to a man who had a strong will and a weak spirit. The desired result was balancing the two men by exchanging their hearts. Roman Catholic mythology also refers to organ and tissue donation by discussing the replacement of a Roman deacon’s gangrenous leg with the leg of a man who recently died. These accounts may be true or simply myths; however in the second century BC skin transplantation occurred during a rhinoplasty. Whether this procedure succeeded is unknown however only a few centuries later success has been documented relating to the skin autografts of Italian surgeon Gaspare Tagliacozzi. He also provided insight into rejection as the many allografts he performed consistently failed. Of course, at this time rejection was not understood or even well researched. However it did provide important information for the future.

Eduard Zirm of Austria performed the first human corneal transplant that was successful in 1905. Arteries and veins were also successfully transplanted during the early 1900s. It was during this time frame that rejection was noted, thanks to many transplants on dogs, and this was the insurmountable problem for many years. Work and research continued and many skin transplantations occurred during World War I. By 1962 a successful replantation surgery had been performed by re-attaching a limb that had been severed. Feeling and function was restored, albeit limited, and this was a great success for the medical field.

The first successful organ transplant occurred between identical twins in 1954. Immunosuppression was not necessary because the twins were genetically identical and the kidney transplant was a success. Other deceased donor transplants before had not been successful because of rejection.

Rejection became a very important area of study and immunosuppressive drugs were considered a possibility. In 1970 cyclosporine was discovered and it was believed to be a possible answer to the constant problem of rejection in transplant patients. Many transplants continued and failure resulted with many. However, small successes were enough to keep hope alive that transplants would one day be successful. Organ donation statistics would need to rise significantly if a solution was found and over time this occurred. Today many organ donation services exist and a good percentage of individuals choose to be organ donors. Of course, the risk of rejection still exists but it has been overcome significantly and today organ donation and transplants are an every day occurrence.

Cardiovascular Benefits of Dark Chocolates

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

There is some great news for all those chocolate lovers out there and that is that dark chocolates are good for you. Well, good for your heart at least! It’s amazing that there are health benefits from chocolate because we all wanted a reason to be able to eat chocolate and not feel guilty! Things like Hershey cherry cordials may be eaten without feeling guilty just don’t eat too many!

There are lots of other dark chocolate selections other than a Hershey’s cherry cordial in case you like other flavors. There are dark chocolate bars that are plain, have nuts, cranberries, and even blueberries. You may even find organic dark chocolates made with a variety of other ingredients including red pepper! That’s certainly one way to spice up your dark chocolate.

When you eat dark chocolate you won’t only be enjoying it but you will also be offering yourself some protection against cardiovascular disease. The reason why there are health benefits from this particular type of chocolate is because of the flavenoids inside. These flavenoids catalyze a reaction in the endothelial cells, cells that line your veins and arteries, to improve function.

The flavenoids, which are basically antioxidants, are also found in a variety of other foods. There are certain fruits, wines, teas, and vegetables that offer up flavenoids that will help you reduce your chances of developing cardiovascular disease. The more flavenoids you eat the lower your chances will be.

In just a short six week study ingesting dark chocolate on a daily basis shows a great increase in endothelial function. This makes researchers believe that if individuals up their intake of flavenoids over a long period of time they will really see amazing benefits in regards to cardiovascular health.

So, if you love chocolate start replacing your milk chocolate with dark chocolate. Not only will you still enjoy the flavor but you will be receiving great benefits that could positively affect your heart health. Remember dark chocolate still has fat and calories so these findings do not give you free reign to eat pounds of chocolate a day. But, the findings so far look positive that dark chocolate may be able to help us in the long run with heart health! Be sure to talk with your doctor before using dark chocolate as a health food so that you can fully understand the implications and what they mean for you.

Elder Care: The Challenge of Caring for Aging Parents

Friday, May 4th, 2007

We are all so accustomed to our parents caring for us that it is so very hard when the roles reverse. We see our parents as young, strong, and invincible. But, as they age we notice how weak they have become and how much they rely on their children to help them now. Life has started changing and no longer do the parents care for the children, but the children are beginning to care for the parents. One of the things that goes along with caring for aging parents is how to handle the mobility problems that ensue when a parent begins using a walker, cane, wheelchair, or is bedridden for months at a time. Fortunately, there are wheelchair lifts, vertical lifts, dumbwaiters, and even residential elevators that assist with these problems and allow individuals to help their parents through the aging process and allow them their mobility even if it is in a different fashion than before.

It might seem difficult to make the decision to purchase a wheelchair lift or even a residential elevator for your aging parents; however these decisions have positive benefits for your parents. For example, if you have a wheelchair lift then your parents can go up and down stairs themselves without additional help. That means you don’t have to be there every single moment to ensure that your parents are ok and that their needs are met. Things like dumbwaiters are also important for aging individuals because food, newspapers, or other items may be placed inside the mini elevator and then it delivers these items to the appointed room.

Dealing with your aging parents is not easy and while it is hard to see your parents grow old and need assistance you don’t have to despair too much because there are so many options available. Your parents can stay mobile through the many devices available and you won’t have to worry about them being stuck in a single room with no way to get around.

Check into the different things that are available and the ones that would be of the most use to your aging parents. You will find that they are affordable enough to purchase and they will make life significantly easier for your parents. So, go ahead and look into vertical lifts, residential elevators, and the like to see if they will help your parents get their mobility back.
